Guitarist Randall Johnson Chung --- A Jambalaya of Guitar work

By Mark Grove (Canadian Guitar Player Magazine)

Randall Johnson Chung is a Toronto Canada based guitarist who's textural flavor is a mixture of Jazz, Blues and funk laden material with a roots bent.

RC has been very busy in the Toronto music scene with his groups and operating RJC Entertainment Agency. As well, RC operates The Johnson Chung School of Guitar. Randall has a blues and free form jazz technique in his chord coloring, and has been able to do just that with the groups he fronts. I imagine he has learned a thing or two from his School of Guitar students.

I listened to Randall's 3 demo tracks online, on his myspace page. " I Got The Blues" is a jazzy hook laden track that is reminiscent of Detroit based signature sound guitarist Bobby Murray, and vocals that are like the Detroit blues sound, with dynamic and graceful chops in each riff. " What I Feel "a bass influenced track with clean chording, along with funk beats and fast tempoed pop rock. This last little diddy called " Move Over Rover " is a bass like instrumental with short and choppy notes and heavy funk overtones...
As long as RC focuses on the type of music being played his work will continue to excel. So look for RC in a Toronto based club or venue playing blues, jazz or ‘phunk.'

Randall Johnson Chung has a degree (Hons.BFA/Mus) in Jazz Performance from York University, where he received the Oscar Peterson Scholarship for excellence in jazz performance.  He currently performs regularly with his various jazz ensembles, and the popular dance band Tamin' Thunder.

Randall has also appeared on on four CDs in Hong Kong, three of the recordings by the popular group "Swing".

Some of his own recordings (see "buy music") include one jazz, two funk, a rock, a blues, and a Christmas CD.

As if this isn't enough, Johnson Chung has created a Youtube channel (Sunday Afternoon Jazz), where he posts weekly videos of himself performing jazz standards.
